Degree Overview

The Master Degree in International Business Administration with Specialization in Luxury Management program provides students with hands-on experience via close links to the industry. AUS is leading the charge in skills for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) through integrating the hard and soft skills our students will need to be competitive in the coming decades. Key learning methods to promote 4IR skills development are instilled in the program.

Through experiential and student-centered learning students are exposed to real-life scenarios and case studies allowing them to develop skills needed to be competitive in the upcoming decades. Chopard & Cie SA, etc. AUS is located within a few hours of Paris, Milan, and London, the top three-fashion capitals of the world. Visits to these cities, accompanied by professors working in the industry, provide insight into the field of Luxury Management, and serve as inspiration for student projects.

This program is for the student seeking to be part of an industry that is growing at twice the rate of growth of the world economy. It is a program that focuses on customer experience through the conceptualization and development of a brand, the ownership, and marketing of that brand, as well as its strategic positioning. The program combines innovation and business to create a unique and memorable customer experience.

Whilst at AUS, students will acquire the tools needed to approach the luxury market with an entrepreneurial mindset. Throughout the degree, students are guided by professionals who provide them with pertinent tools for creative opportunities. This real-time applied experience is in stark contrast to many university professors focused solely on theory or outdated methodologies.

Luxury Management encompasses a wide range of areas ranging from hotels and spas to food and beverage. The degree aims to provide the student with a complete understanding of the context in which organizations operate in today’s modern world by developing the student’s knowledge and skills across areas including strategy, marketing, and finance.

The degree builds on a student’s knowledge developed at a bachelor level and will develop their business personality and hone their management skills. Students will study a range of core modules in which they will do an in-depth analysis of business practices in areas such as management, business law, and corporate strategy in an international context. Students will then dive further into their modules and learn the application of theory to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the impact their knowledge can have.

Module Descriptions

Emerging Technologies

The fourth industrial revolution, or 4IR, is upon us, and emerging technologies are at its core. Businesses must adapt to this new reality or they will jeopardize their own survival. In this context, a solid understanding of emerging technologies and their potential value to an organization is critical for any business manager.

This course explores the current spectrum of emerging technologies from various perspectives, with a focus on their business application for competitive advantage. The emphasis is on fostering the development of students’ individual opinions on this fast-evolving theme.

This course starts by introducing an overview of emerging technologies. It then continues by exploring eight topics where some specific emerging technologies are explored for their disruptive potential. However, additional emerging technologies may be involved in any topical discussion. Indeed, since many of these emerging technologies are interconnected or even interdependent, each class is expected to touch upon topics otherwise covered in other classes. This reflects the complexity of the overall theme which must be grasped too. The course ends with a discussion on the application of ethics in using such technologies.

Leadership and Team Building

The course aims to introduce the key theories and paradigms of leadership with a view to develop the student’s personal framework for becoming a successful manager and leader. Through self-assessment exercises, the students will identify the areas in their skill set that will benefit from continuous improvement, with a view to become a better team player, manager,

International Relations

We live in an exciting period of history. The world is getting smaller, moving faster, and becoming interconnected in ways never experienced before. The highly globalized world of the present has generated more wealth, scientific innovation, and cross-national cooperation ever witnessed in history. Yet at the same time the prospects of war, terror, and environmental degradation still generate immense uncertainty and instability, as we’ve witnessed this year with COVID-19

The rapid barrage of information emanating from the online news outlets, social media, television, and other forms of communication has in part transformed many people into “informed” global citizens. However, while there may be a multitude of individuals who know of the events that are occurring in the world, many still do not understand what is happening. That is, there’s a huge difference between being up to date on the news (which is a good thing) and being able to explain why events happened; and what consequences they may bring.

In this course, we’ll review some of the theories underlying international relations and brief historical events that have impacted how the world operates today. We’ll discuss and learn about various topics and issues which drive decision-making and how those decisions impact the world. We’ll also look at how those and why those decisions are made.

Business Strategy

This introductory strategy course emphasizes the fundamentals of corporate and business level strategy formulation, while also evaluating inter-related aspects of strategy implementation (via strategic case analysis). Strategic management is a set of managerial decisions and actions that affect the long-run performance of the firm, in its business environment. It includes environmental scanning (internal and external), strategy formulation, strategy implementation and evaluation and control. To be successful in the long run the firm must not only be able to execute current activities in existing markets, it must also be able to adapt its activities to new and changing markets. This course will provide conceptual frameworks, tools and techniques to analyze, develop, and implement firm strategies, including discussion of the dynamics and evolution of industry structure, and the pattern of interaction among the competitors in the industry. The course will also discuss assessment of the organizational resources that form the basis for firm-specific capabilities (internal assessment) that can be leveraged to develop strong/superior competitive strategy in the marketplace. Aspects of strategy implementation and feedback/control will be briefly discussed alongside the strategy formulation and analysis aspects.

Human Resource Management

Most companies will proclaim that the people are their most important asset. Managing people effectively is an important element of organizational effectiveness and a base for the long-term, sustainable competitive advantage. Through this course, students will develop an understanding of how decisions related to managing human resource contribute to organizational effectiveness and a firm’s competitive advantage.

Organizational Behavior

Organizational Behavior course deals with human behavior in a variety of organizations and business situations. Great part of our lives we spend in organizations. As students in schools and universities, as adults in offices and factories, as consumers in leisure organizations like clubs and shops. We will view differently the organizations when we put to practice and reflection what we already know about structures that surround us. And we will possibly be better in acting within them as well as managing and directing them as leaders. As we start developing the conceptual framework, the in-depth case discussions, and skill-oriented activities will be applied to each topic. Covered topics will include motivation and attitudes, values and personality, group and team dynamics, leadership, communications, power, conflicts and negotiations, change management and organizational design.

Mgt. for Sustainable Development

This course will examine the framework of sustainable development in terms of economic development, social inclusion, governance & environmental stewardship. An overview of the world economy will be presented, exploring the concepts of population growth & demographics, poverty & income inequalities, environmental threats, social well-being, economic empowerment, urbanization & governance. The notions of convergence and divergence will be discussed with regard to income gaps & social inclusion. Participants will be encouraged to actively engage in discussions & exercises to measure and compare certain economic and social indicators in order to better grasp their meanings and applications.

During their degree students must undertake at least one internship. Students are support by our dedicated careers team and faculty to ensure they can find an internship relevant to their career path. Students are also encouraged to undertake additional internships in other fundamental business areas in order to broader their experience and enhance their CV.
